Managing Third party Application Updates & Patches

Article Summary

IT Admins can get a view of Third Party Applications (having one or more app updates available) installed on Scalefusion managed Windows devices, as per devices as well as apps, sync the updates and take more actions on them all from one place.

This document covers details of the features provided on Scalefusion Dashboard for managing third-party app updates.

Pre-requisites

  1. Configure Third Party Application Update & Patch Management Settings
  2. Scalefusion MDM Agent's (for Windows) latest version should be installed on devices.

Description

  1. On Scalefusion Dashboard, navigate to Update & Patch Management > Windows App Patches
  2. Based on the configuration settings, once the Scalefusion agent syncs the available updates, they will start appearing on Dashboard.
  3. Following details are fetched and displayed with respect to app updates. There are two ways in which you can view the updates:
    1. Devices View: Provides the details based on devices on which app(s) are to be updated.
    2. Apps View: Provides the details based on apps for which updated version is to be installed on devices.

Devices View

Devices view will display list of devices where on each device, one or more app update is available. In case all the apps are updated on a device, that device will not be visible in Devices view. Following are the components in device view:

Summary

A quick view shows following information on status of updates

  • Devices Updated: The total no. of devices which have the latest version of published apps.
  • Pending Updates: No. of devices on which updates are pending (not yet installed). The total no. of devices which don’t have latest version of one or more published apps.

Filters

You can filter and view the devices accordingly. The devices can be filtered over following:

Groups

Lists all devices in the selected group. By default, devices of all groups are shown

Device Profile

Lists all Windows device profiles. By default, devices of all profiles are shown

Devices

Allows you to select a particular device and view its details. You can also search for a device by name, serial number, IMEI number etc.

Update Status

Filters devices based on app update status. The status can be Installed, Pending or Unknown

Update Install Status

Filters devices based on installation status of updates. The installation status can be chosen from:

  • Approved
  • Sent for Installation
  • Downloading
  • Downloaded
  • Installing
  • Installed
  • Download Failed
  • Installation Failed
  • Aborted

Device Details

The devices view displays following details with respect to updates:

  1. Device Name
  2. Group/Profile: The Group and Profile applied on the device
  3. Available App Updates: No. of app updates which are pending (not yet installed) on the device
  4. Last Scan: The date and time when the device was last scanned by the agent for app updates. This helps in giving an approximate idea when the next sync will take place.

Device Level Actions

Following actions can be performed on devices.

These actions are present under Actions menu in front of each device

  1. View: Clicking on the eye icon opens a Dialog that displays the installed apps on the device with their version, available updates (if any) and other related information. Here, you can also filter the apps by their update install status.
  2. Download: Downloads a CSV of all the apps along with their status of updates installation and other details.

Bulk Actions on Devices

You can also perform actions on all or selected devices in bulk. To access these actions, click on the three dots at the right of filters. Following actions can be performed:

  1. Update All / Selected Devices: Initiates installing the pending app updates on all or selected devices.
  2. Sync Apps: Agent will scan the device and will send those apps' details to backend for which update is available.
  3. Sync Update Status: It syncs the installation status of app updates.

Apps View

Apps view will display list of apps where for each app, one or more device is present where this app is not updated. In case an app is updated on all devices, that app will not be visible in Apps view. Following are the components in apps view:

  • Updated Apps: The total no. of Apps which are installed on one or more devices with their latest version.
  • Available App Updates: Total app updates pending (latest version is not installed) across the devices (all or group).

Filters

You can filter and view the updates accordingly. The updates can be filtered over following:

Groups

Lists all Windows device profiles. By default, devices of all profiles are shown

Devices

Allows you to select a device name and view its details. You can also search for a device by name, serial number, IMEI number etc.

Update Status

Filters apps based on app update status. The status can be Installed, Pending or Unknown

Update Install Status

Filters apps based on installation status of updates. The installation status can be chosen from:

  • Approved
  • Sent for Installation
  • Downloading
  • Downloaded
  • Installing
  • Installed
  • Download Failed
  • Installation Failed
  • Aborted

App Details

The apps view displays following details with respect to each app:

  1. Name: The name of the app
  2. Publisher: The app's publisher
  3. Available On Devices: No. of devices on which the app's updated version is available
  4. Failed On Devices: No. of devices on which the installation or download of the app update failed

Actions on Apps

Following actions can be performed on an app:

These actions are present under Actions menu in front of each app

  1. View: Clicking on the eye icon opens a Dialog that displays information about the status of app update on device:
    • Device(s) Name on which it is installed
    • Current status of installation of the app's updated version on the device
    • Updated on: The date and time when the update last synced with the device
  2. Download: Downloads a report of all the updates in csv format

Bulk Actions on Apps

You can also perform actions on all or selected apps in bulk. To access these actions, click on the three dots at the right of filters. Following actions can be performed:

  1. Update All Devices: Initiates installing the pending app updates on all devices.
  2. Push Selected Update(s): Pushes the updated version of selected apps on devices.
    This action is visible if you select few apps from the list.

  3. Sync Apps: Agent will scan the device and will send those apps' details to backend for which update is available.
  4. Sync Update Status: It syncs the installation status of app updates.
In some cases, updating an application may change the installation path of the app (as for example notepad++ being updated from 32-bit to 64-bit). For such applications you would need to edit the path from Device profiles > Select Apps, while defining Multi-App / Single App Kiosk mode / App Locker policy for the updated application to reflect on devices. This has to be done only on device profile which is applied on the devices.

Known Behavior

  1. App updates at User-Level are not fully supported as of now.
  2. For user level apps, Patch management will not be supported on devices enrolled under Modern Management with Multi-App Kiosk Mode or Single App Mode.
